Project Simulation Consulting

Project Simulation Consulting’s (PSC) purpose is to leverage METSIM® software expertise to empower industries with advanced process simulation solutions. We are committed to assisting businesses in optimizing their chemical and metallurgical processes, enhancing efficiency, minimizing environmental impact, and driving innovation through data-driven insights and simulations.

Project Simulation Consulting (Pty) Ltd (aka PSC) is an entirely separate business entity to Treo and has existed primarily to sell Metsim software, to provide training and technical support to its clients and simulation engineering consultancy services.

PSC was instrumental to Treo’s startup. Given the history between the two companies and nature of Treo’s services offering, synergies exist between the two companies in that clients who have engaged PSC for simulation project services to progress projects beyond feasibility have also engaged Treo to assist with project engineering, procurement and construction consultancy services.

Metsim originated as a metallurgical process simulation program, written to perform mass balances around the major unit operations of complex process flowsheets. Application of the program proved so successful that it was expanded to include detailed heat balances, chemistry, process controls, equipment sizing, cost estimation, and process analysis. The unique nature of the programming language, APL, allows modification and expansion of the system with minimum effort and permits the incorporation of continuing technological innovations in process simulation.

METSIM® Model Development

In collaboration with PSC, Treo offers consultancy services for full Life-Of-Mine Metsim model development from the geological Mine Block Model to the final production of metals & other minerals. PSC has been servicing Metsim clients for many years and has acquired specialist Metsim simulation model development knowledge since its inception for advanced mining and process simulation.

Services offered include the development of steady-state & dynamic Metsim simulation models including detailed mass-, energy- and component balances, equipment lists, design & operating criteria.

METSIM® Model Audits

PSC conducts full audits of client Metsim simulation models against supplied process flow diagrams (PFD’s), process design criteria and equipment lists. A Metsim model audit will validate the mass and energy balance of the process and provide peace-of-mind that each unit operation in the model has been setup according to industry best practice standards. A model audit also provides the client with a means of scrutinising whether the developed model accurately represents the process.

Once a full model audit has been conducted a client audit report is generated and recommendations are made to improve model adherence to stringent quality criteria thus improving the overall performance of the simulation model.

METSIM® Simulation Benefits:

  • To provide detailed water, mass and component balances for entire process circuits
  • To validate proposed pre-feasibility engineering design before detailed
    engineering & design commences
  • To validate the proposed control philosophy of an operation
  • To validate the suggested ROI of a project in granular detail
  • To determine the effect of adverse criteria (i.e. extreme weather) on a
proposed design and make suggestions for alternative processing options
  • To provide an operational model to simulate the “first-fill” process of an operation for training of personnel prior to commissioning to protect the capital invested
  • To provide an operational model to track forecasted actual vs planned head grade feed to the plant and to plan stockpile reclaim rates on either a daily or by-shift basis – if ores are stacked into different stockpiles, this model will allow users to track stockpile inventories and optimize reclaim rates
  • To enable digital twin and metal accounting solutions
